About Me
Jun 11th, 2008 by Terry Carter
My name is Terry Carter, and I’m an assistant professor (teaching faculty) at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. I teach graduate students in the Adult Learning program within the School of Education. My educational background includes master’s and doctoral degrees in Human Resource Development from George Washington University where I was a member of the Executive Leadership program (ELP 7). I’ve been teaching at VCU since 2005.
In a pre-academic life, I’ve worked as an organization development consultant and trainer at the Federal Reserve Bank for ten years, and prior to that, in various teaching, training, and consulting jobs since 1981.
In the Adult Learning Program, we encourage reflective practice among our students. In the past, our students have used an e-portfolio in Blackboard for this purpose, but we’re looking for a more creative writing opportunity to encourage them to “make their thinking visible” (Collins, Brown & Holum, 1991). My goal with this blog is to model becoming a reflective practitioner by journaling my thoughts and experiences in teaching and learning at VCU.
When I’m not at working, my favorite places to be are in my garden, sailing along the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay with my husband, and spending time with our two golden retrievers, Carolina and Georgia, ages 7 and 3.

Dr. Carter, Thanks for taking the program into the world of blogging. I’m enjoying getting set up for the semester. Sounds like you have some fun hobbies. Hope you get to do some sailing this holiday weekend.
